My opinion
Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage.
Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage.
Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage.
I'll stop here with my attempt at breaking the record number of Garbage-references
in one Angelico-review or interview. It was
no easy target to beat, because the comparison is really omnipresent.
And it makes sense too : AngeliCo brings us a gulp of modern and angry female-powered
rock with a heavy bass, firm rhythms, fine tapes & loops, a nice and mean
guitar and an angry bitch up front. In short: Garbage à la Flamande, Blondie
à Anvers, Ashbury Faith with a
ma'am, and Sin Alley without the Stetson.
The band was presented with the catchy singles "Freak You Out"
and "Good about You" (written by several daughters of Brian -
Pet Sounds - Wilson). "Anything" has an truly irresistable bassline
anc chorus, and would also deserve a status as an A-side on something. The rest
of the songs on the debut-CD "No Rest for the Wicked" don't match up
to that trio, but "Wrong Side of the Right", "Stop me"
and the slow "City" save the day, and win the match on points.
Songs as "Someone to Save" or "Down on You"
do have a catchy refrain to boast about, but sink too deep in the rest of the
song to stay interesting.
If AngeliCo were to get themselves a live reputation (not on Pepsi Pop, but at
festivals and clubs and the like), and if they were to get a few more great songs,
i'd bet some money on them making it big. Until then, it'll take 'em a while to
escape the comparison with that American producers-band with a Schottish singer.
And your opinion?
Did I get it all wrong, or was I spot-on ? Do you want to share your opinion about
this cd ? Send it in, and I'll put it up here !
This Album in the Press
- Han Zinzen in Rif-Raf (november) : "No Rest for the Wicked
- Bart Steenhaut in Metro (De Morgen) : "Een beetje mechanicien
