Lowpass is the group of Mario Vaerewijck, who previously had been experimenting
in a group called Insekt. Nobody seems to have info on this band, except that
is was mentioned on U2's Achtung Baby as a big influence.
In Lowpass, Mario is accompanied by Marlon Waghemans (who had been playing
in the guitar band Jason Rawhead before) and by the Canadian singer Juliet
Caron.
Their debut album "Fear of the Flood" was very well received, a bit
of a parallel with that other triphop group from Belgium : Hoover.
"A didgeridoo sets the tone of Fear of the Flood, the debut-cd of
Lowpass. Not exactly an instrument you would associate with words like Bristol,
Tricky, Portishead or other triphop. Yet Lowpass borrows from the triphop-dictionary,
without giving in on originality and inventivity. Etheric drum-loops and luscious
samples are percerctly combined with the mesmerizing voice of the Canadian J.C.Carion."
After the album, they succesfully proved their "triphop/breakbeats/guitars/voice-that-stands-out"
also has a place on stage. They played the Lowlands-festival in Holland and managed
to fill the techno-tent at the Belgian Pukkelpop festival.
In 1998, Juliet Caron left the band to work on a solo career. She announced she
would play intimistic, singer-songwriter-like material. Instead of continuing
with Lowpass, Vaerewijck & Waghemans started a new band with English singer
Nina Babet as Akyra which released it's debut album "Freak
Voyeurs" in 1999.
