Luttele minuten na haar nationale Eurosongoverwinning stond Vanessa Chinitor al met een foto en een audiofragment op het internet. Met dank aan de jonge Genkenaar Dirk Houbrechts, die sinds januari 1998 in zijn vrije tijd de Belgian Pop & Rock Archives uitbaat op http://houbi.com/belpop/.
Die liefhebberij is er allerminst aan te merken. Het is een website die de degelijkheid en het oog voor detail heeft van een levenswerk. Hij bevat de verhalen van bijna tweehonderd melomane Belgen en is gelardeerd met een pak geluidsmateriaal.

Sinds de man enkele maanden geleden met een poptelex is begonnen, vallen ook zijn snelheid en vindingrijkheid op. Zo kan nu al een onuitgegeven nummer uit het — volgende week te verschijnen — nieuwe album van dEUS beluisterd worden. En nieuwe Belgische singles zijn meteen al voor verdere analyse beschikbaar. Er is nauwelijks iets wat ogen ontsnapt.

Als beroepsstatisticus bij de VDAB geeft Houbrechts ook graag cijfers mee. De site mocht in zijn eerste levensjaar bezoek ontvangen uit bijna 120 landen. Vooral de interesse van Zweden en Australië valt op.
De grootste magneet is overduidelijk Brel. Zijn biografie is het populairste kortverhaal en hij gaat met „Ne me quitte pas” Soeur Sourire en Plastic Bertrand vooraf in de lijst van meest beluisterde audiofragmenten. Van de jongste lichting zijn dEUS, Soulwax en K's Choice erg gegeerd (J.D.)

That this is a hobby is nowhere to be seen. It is a website that has the thoroughness and the attention for detail of a life's work. It contains the stories of almost twohundred melomanous co-Belgians and is interspersed with a lot of audio material.

Since the man has started a poptelex a few months ago, his speed and ingenuity catch the eye. For instance, you can find an unpublished song from the new album of dEUS - to be released only next week. And new belgian singles are ready for further analysis right away. There is hardly anything that escapes his eyes.

As a professional statistician with the VDAB, Houbrechts also loves to give numbers. The site had visitors from almost 120 countries in it's first year of existence. Especially the high amounts of visitors from Sweden and Australië strike the eye.
The biggest magnet is clearly Brel. His biography is the most popular short story and he precedes Soeur Sourire and Plastic Bertrand with his "Ne me quittes pas" in the list of most popular audio-bits. Of the newer generations dEUS, Soulwax and K's Choice are in high demand (J.D.)
