My opinion

Ooit aangekondigd als een kruising van Michael Nyman en Tom Waits, maar dit is een vlag die Bar 8 duidelijk niet echt meer dekt. Sinds de oprichting zijn er immers serieus wat bandleden bijgekomen, en daarmee ook meer invloeden in de muziek.
Songs staan er op "Dwarfish Spectacles" in twee variëteiten. Enerzijds redelijk toegankelijke en emotionele songs (John Cale in mind), en anderzijds lossere en stukken waar het instrumentale de boventoon voert (niks vast in mind). Dat levert op eenzelfde CD contrasten op als "Welcome to this place" (Woodentops on a night at the opera) tegenover "It's the Day" (Wim Mertens meets spleen). Beide zijn knap gedaan, maar qua instant gratification zinken ze wel in het niets bij de meer poppy songs als "Serious Clown", "Human Game", "Waiting room" ... Op termijn (na het bekende "meerdere beluisteringen" dus) gaat de voorkeur echter uit naar de originelere, en diepgravender tracks als "It's the Day" of de afsluiter "Punch & Judy Show".
Minpunt is dat de stem van Bart-Amand (de leider van deze groep, ooit nog rock-rally finalist met 801KD Concept) me één keer te veel deed denken aan Dirk Dhaenens (die van Derek & The Dirt, en Derek & Vis). En op zo'n nieuwe DD zit er niet dadelijk iemand te wachten, dacht ik (ik toch alleszins niet).
Dwarfish Spectacles is de CD van een man/groep die getuigt van veel lef en een flinke scheut talent, dat op een paar plaatsen echter ook op zijn beperkingen stuit. Nu nog "in die beschränkung sich die meister zeigen", en we zijn er.

Il faut par example écouter "Punch & Judy Show", pour s'apercevoir qu'ils déplacent le propos vers une musique hybride et "narrative", en Charlie Mingus du café de la gare ... En somme, une disque qui c'est passé près de chez vous et qui pourrait vous emmener un peu plus loin."

Hoewel nog niet volgroeid getuigt Bar 8 op deze zelf geproduceerde eersteling toch al van een boeiende persoonlijkheid."
