My opinion
Jaune Toujours peddles on "Brusk" (their second CD already) driven
by an inventive brass-section, a drummer in a hurry, a "piano des pauvres"
and perfect bilinguality between Les Négresses Vertes and the Roma,
between the merryness of the pub and the sadness of the gutter, between South
and Eastern Europe ... music that carries the spirit of the metropole in it. "File
under Belgian folk" is the suggestion that the label put on the back side
of the CD, but if you still have room under "bluesjazzchansonfanfare"
or "metropolitan orchestra" it's even better there.
The most memorable moment on Brusk sadly for Jaune Toujours comes when the recognizable
voice of Vera Coomans steps in on "N-Z-O-W" (North, South,
East, West), and carries with her sweet memories of the days she produced classics
such as "Witte Nachten" and "Niets is voor altijd". The sad
part is not that this is the best song, on the contrary, but that this put the
finger on the wound of the poor vocals on most of the pieces. The lyrics are imaginative,
but somehow don't seem to fit in very well with the music. Much is made up by
the inventive blowers of various kind of horns that are member or guest of the
band. The other moments on the cd I like most are those when the merryness gets
the upperhand as in "Voor wat het is" or "Maravilloso",
both the kind of song that could have a green negrogirl step in at any time.
All in all "Brusk" seems a little bit "hurried", with not
enough attention being paid to detail to keep interesting all the way to the end.
But it is an interesting confrontation of a band with a town, in which the town
wins. Again. "yellow all the time" would quickly become a bore.
Sent-In Opinons :
en even bleven staan.

This Album in the Press
- Metro (De Morgen) : "This boundary-breaking band from Brussels
lead by singer-accordionplayer Piet Maris can't be caught out easily ... Maris
mirrors the chanson-tradition, writes good and engaged lyrics, but unfortunately
is a poor singer".
- Bart Vandormael voor CaféBelge
: "Highrise-tango. Metro-fado. crosseyed pubrembetica. A new sound from
Brussels. The strangest thing get written about Jaune Toujours, but if you put
them all together, you get an idea what the band of singer and accordionist Piet
Maris is all about"

Where to buy this CD ?
You can order this CD from a number of locations (prices researched on July
4, 2000, but nothing guarantees they still are the same when you read this).
The lowest price is in yellow, the highest in red. This price comparison doesn't
take things into account like deduction of shipping expenses when ordering more
than 1 cd, bonus points, differences in guarantees ... Shipping prices are those
for customers in Belgium.
Have you seen this record elsewhere on the net, do you own an online-CD-shop
with Belgian products in it, or if there's something wrong with my calculations
