Francis Weyer, as is his real name, started out playing guitar with Patrick
Ruymen in "Les Caraïbes", who played covermusic at the "bals populaire".
Novelty for a Belgian group in 1963 : they had an echo chamber.
STogether with Ruymen, he then formed "Liberty Six" in 1965, a unique
group in the history of Belgian pop music.
Patrick Ruymen in "Wit-lof from Belgium" : "I had piles of
songs lying on the shelf. On that we built a complete show, a mix of say Commander
Cody and Frank Zappa. We were ten years early. But even the fact we performed
our own material almost exclusively, was unique for Belgium at that time."
When the band got into trouble with their frontman, he was replaced by Lou
Depryck. After the failure of their one and only single, the group was disbanded.
Weyer then went to the J.J.-Band and Plus, who backed up Jess
& James on their soulful hit "Move".
In the seventies he changed course to romantic melodies, mandolins and Spanish
guitars. He changed his name to Francis Goya and scored a worldwide hit with "Nostalgia".
In Belgium the song got to n°3 in the hitparades.
The successors like "Café concert" and "Maria Padilha"
couldn't have the same impact and Goya slowly faded out of the image.
